Causality of War, Using Game Play

IB History Standard Level Year 1 students demonstrated their knowledge of the causality of war in an interesting way – RISK!  That’s right, Mr. Horstmann, put aside traditional methods of instruction and took a different approach.  After altering the rules of the game to fit the objective of the lesson, students were broken into teams and played a round of Risk under the new guidelines.  Mr. Horstmann refereed the competition while stopping play periodically to connect back to specific IB content.

Essential Question for the lesson:  Evaluate the claim that “war is merely the continuation of policy by other means” in regards to world war.
