In IB Biology students took to the fields of the STEM Academy to to conduct a survey of the grasses and weed types in our front lawn! Students collaborated together using a Quadrat Sampling technique. This allows for a large field to be subdivided and examined in smaller more manageable quadrants.
Specifically students were looking for the presence of two specific species to see if there was an interspecies association. Students then took their group results and collected them as a class to see if there was a correlation from the results of the classes findings.
Students also took qualitative notes to add to an in class discussion of the quantitate findings later in class to draw additional conclusions about their observations.
